The International Olympic Committee (IOC) declared itself not a super world government and cannot bring forth a resolution to the politics related to China even though activists pointed out that the committee ignored Tibetan and Uighur testimonials of human rights genocide. The IOC is criticized to have granted China’s city Beijing as the host of the 2022 Olympics due to their human rights legacy.
People representing Tibet and Hong Kong groups have advocated for stoppage, but even with a meeting in October, the IOC did not help them with any of their concerns. They also said anything of an assurance from China to the IOC holds no value. IOC President, Thomas Bach, replied with the following statements: “We are taking this very seriously. Human rights and labor rights and others are and will be part of the host contract. We are working very closely with the organising committee. We are monitoring supply chains, labour rights, freedom of press, and many other issues. This is our responsibility.”
The United States has already condemned China’s abuses against Muslim Uighurs in Xinjiang and harsh restrictions in Tibet as crimes of genocide and that which goes against humanity. As always, China denies the truth of their crimes, abuses, and violations in their own country.
